4001 Equal Educational Opportunities

The Wilkes County Board of Education affirms the principle that every student -- regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, cultural or economic background, or disability -- should be given an equal educational opportunity for educational development. Further, no student, on the basis of sex, marital status, pregnancy, or parenthood, will be excluded from participating in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity conducted by the district. The school district will treat its students without discrimination in regard to course offerings, athletics, counseling, employment assistance and extracurricular activities.

Any student, parent or guardian who feels that this policy has been misinterpreted, misapplied or violated may file a grievance in accordance with Board of Education policy 1740/4010, Student and Parent Grievance Procedure.

The superintendent will develop appropriate procedures to ensure that public education is provided to each qualified student with disabilities in accordance with 34 C.F.R. pt. 104, subpart D.
