Driver Education Instruction

Effective 2004-2005, all students must successfully complete 30 hours of classroom and 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel instruction in order to complete Driver Education. Students must be 14-1/2 years old on or before the starting date of class work. Students failing to complete the classroom or Behind-the-Wheel requirements will not be allowed to enroll in future sessions. Exception is made only if the student was prohibited from meeting all sessions required due to extenuating circumstances (beyond the student’s control), i.e., hospitalization, death in the immediate family, etc. Any student appealing this requirement must complete an appeals form and submit the form to the Director of Driver Education for special consideration. All students taking Driver Education must be enrolled in Wilkes County Schools or an approved private or home school located in Wilkes County. Upon completion of Behind-the-Wheel instruction, students must successfully complete a fifty (50) item exit exam with a minimum passing score of 80%. Students will be allowed three attempts to pass the exit exam.
