Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the
Wilkes County Board of Education
August 4, 2014
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, August 4, 2014 in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Board Members Mr. Rick Lankford, Mr. Darren Shumate and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty Hemric, Associate Superintendent Dr. Wanda Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Anna R. Lankford, and Board Attorney Fred Johnson. Administrative staff included Director of Athletics and Healthful Living Mr. Chris Skabo, Director of Secondary Education Mr. Mark Byrd, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.
Dr. Marty Hemric asked for a moment of silence for Mr. Julius C. Hubbard Jr., to pay tribute and offer our condolences to the family in honor and recognition of his service to the youth and our communities in Wilkes County.
Dr. Marty Hemric also paid tribute to Mrs. Linda Smith teacher from Boomer-Ferguson Elementary School whom recently passed away.
Dr. Marty Hemric introduced and recognized Mr. Seth Prevette to the Board Members as our new Chief Finance Officer.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.
Focus on the Curriculum regarding Read to Achieve Update and Credit by Demonstrated Mastery Overview was presented by Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Anna Lankford.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. No one had signed up.
Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook asked if the agenda needed to be amended. Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman asked that the minutes from June 26, 2014 meeting be amended to state on page 6 of 6 to read on a motion by Mr. Shumate approving the 2014-2015 Renewal Contract. On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the minutes and Agenda was amended and approved as presented.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried the Disposition of Surplus Items was approved as presented. (See attachment number one)
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried the 2014-2015 Calendar Changes were approved as presented.
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried the NC Title I Statement of Assurance was approved as presented.
Director of Athletics and Healthful Living, Mr. Chris Skabo presented to the Board Members the Athletic Summary Report for 2013-2014.
Director of Athletics and Healthful Living, Mr. Chris Skabo along with the Wilkes County Health Department Director Ms. Ann Absher presented to the Board the School Health Advisory Report. North Carolina requires that each school district establish and maintain a local School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) to help plan, implement, and monitor school health education programs and activities.
Mrs. Anna Lankford, Assistant Superintendent presented the Cooperative Agreement between Wilkes County Schools and the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Vocation Rehabilitation.
Dr. Marty Hemric gave an update to the Board regarding the Moravian Falls project.
Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook made the following announcements:

Board Members wished Dr. Wanda Hutchinson, Associate Superintendent well as she begins her retirement from Wilkes County Schools.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook announced the next Board meeting September 8, 2014 5:30 p.m. in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom, 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Board adjourned at 6:23 p.m. to closed session; to prevent the disclosure of information that is privileged or confidential under state or federal law, including but not limited to N.C.G.S. 115C-319, N.C.G.S. 115C-402, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(1) to consult with its attorney in order to preserve the attorney-client privilege, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(3); to consider the qualification, competence, performance, character, fitness, conditions of appointment, or conditions of initial employment of an individual public officer or employee, or prospective public officer or employee, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(6).
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Board adjourned from closed session at 7:10 p.m.
