Summary of Board Minutes March 3, 2015
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Board Members Mr. Rick Lankford, and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III. Board Member Mr. Darren Shumate was absent. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty T. Hemric, Associate Superintendent Ms. Anna Lankford, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd, Director of Business Services & Chief School Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, Director of Human Resources Dr. Westley Wood, Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.
On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the agenda was approved as presented.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Mr. Eddie Settle, Chairman for the Wilkes County Commissioner’s. We appreciate the support and partnership with our Wilkes County Government.
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the C.B. Eller 2014 No Kid Hungry Breakfast Challenge. C.B. Eller Elementary School was the 2nd Place winner of all elementary schools. C. B. Eller had a 54% increase in breakfast participation in October 2014 as compared to October 2013.
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the 2014 No Kid Hungry Breakfast Challenge. Wilkes County Schools Child Nutrition Department was one of 5, out of 72 districts, that enrolled 100% of their schools to win the 2014 No Kid Hungry Breakfast Challenge. Each winner is the top district in their DPI category.
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus. Two Millers Creek Elementary students were chosen to participate in the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus earlier this winter. The students were chosen by audition to participate with 198 other students from around North Carolina. Congratulations Parker Childress and Tori Teague.
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the 2014-2015 Wilkes County Schools Spelling Bee Winners. On January 22, 2015, seventeen elementary and middle school students participated in the 20014-2015 Spelling Bee competition. After a well fought competition, Mackenzie Starr was once again victorious. This year marks Miss Starr’s third consecutive victory. She is a student at West Wilkes Middle School. Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the 2014-2015 Northwest Region 7 District Science Fair Winners. Twenty-two Wilkes County Students received awards in the Northwest Region 7 Science Fair. The awards represent various scientific categories. To be eligible for this competition, each student had to place either first or second at the local science fair level.

Focus on the Curriculum was presented by Ms. April Marr, Director of Student Services. Ms. Marr introduced InfoSnap, a new on-line Student Enrollment process. Once a parent has completed an enrollment for one child, their basic identifying information is copied into the new child’s enrollment form and fields can be edited as needed. It also allows parent’s access to their child’s enrollment information. This process will increase equality and equity across the district in student enrollment.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. No one had signed up.

Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook made the following announcements:
March 20, 2015 – Third Grading Period Ends
March 23, 2015 – Required Teacher Workday
March 24, 2015 – Fourth Grading Period Begins
Also, Chairman Mr. Ruby Holbrook along with Superintendent, Mr. Marty Hemric invited Board Members to take a walk/tour of Moravian Falls Elementary School. The new classroom furniture should be arriving and everything will be completed mid-April.
Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook extended a warm welcome to Master Logan Goss, a student at West Wilkes Middle School attending to obtain his citizenship badge for The Boy Scouts of America.
Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook announced the next Board meeting will be April 13, 2015 5:30 p.m. at East Wilkes Middle School/Media Center, 2202 Macedonia Church Road, Ronda, North Carolina.
On a motion from Ms. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy, and duly carried, the Board adjourned at 6:15 p.m. to closed session; to prevent the disclosure of information that is privileged or confidential under state or federal law, including but not limited to N.C.G.S. 115C-319, N.C.G.S. 115C-402, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(1) to consult with its attorney in order to preserve the attorney-client privilege, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(3) to establish, or to instruct the public body’s staff or negotiating agents concerning the position to be taken by on behalf of the Board of Education in negotiating the price and other material terms of a contract or proposed contract for the acquisition of real property, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11 (a)(5)

On a motion by Ms. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the Board adjourned from closed session at 7:03 p.m.
