Summary of Board Minutes June 1, 2015

 

The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, June 1, 2015 in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659. 

 

Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Board Members, Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Mr. Rick Lankford, Mr. Darren Shumate, and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III.  Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty T. Hemric, Associate Superintendent Ms. Anna Lankford, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd, Director of Business Services & Chief School Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, Director of Human Resources Dr. Westley Wood, Director of Athletics and Healthful Living Mr. Chris Skabo, Director of Student Services Ms. April Marr, Director of Secondary Education Dr. Donna Cotton, Director of Exceptional Children Ms. Tracee McManus, School Board Attorney Mr. Fred Johnson, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the agenda was approved as presented.

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook led the Invocation and called the meeting to order.

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.  We wish all students, teachers, and staff members a strong finish to the 2014-2015 school year.  We also want to congratulate over 600 seniors as they transition to the next phase in their life.

 

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized The Wilkes Education Foundation President Mr. Danny Holman, along with members Mr. Bill Myers, and Jody Hamby.  They awarded 31 Mini-Grant projects for the 2015-2016 school year.  Since the 1985-1986 school year, the Wilkes Education Foundation has funded 724 mini-grant projects for a total of $381,521.71.

 

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the Walmart Community Grant.  Ms. Teresa Tucker, who is a School Nurse at East Wilkes Middle School, C. B. Eller Elementary and Ronda-Clingman has been awarded a $420.00 grant from the Walmart Community Grant Team and Facility #13337.

 

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the Four Wilkes County high school students from West Wilkes High School which won fourth place in the North Carolina Financial Quiz Bowl.  Congratulations to:

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the High School Battle of the Books winner.  The North Wilkes High School Battle of the Books team was victorious.  The North High team placed first in the 2015 High School Battle of the Books competition.  Members of the team are:

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized Jessica Norman, a student at West Wilkes Middle School who won first place at the Beta Club Convention held in February at the four Seasons Hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Jessica’s first place win was in the Oil and Acrylics division. Congratulations Jessica!

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the West Wilkes High School Electric Vehicle (EV) Team.  West Wilkes High School’s Electric Vehicle Team dominated the 2015 Challenge at the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research in Garysburg in April. The team won first place in autocross, acceleration, range, vehicle design and overall.

Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments.  No one had signed up.

 

On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the minutes were approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the following Personnel Report and Blue Sheet were approved.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried the Renewal of Licensed Personnel was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the Acceptable Use/Internet Safety Policy Number 3225/7320 was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Immunization Requirements for School Admission Policy Number 4110 was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Recruitment and Selection of Personnel Policy Number 7100 was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Leave of Absence Policy Number 7510 was approved as presented.

 

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried the out of county/overnight field trips were approved as presented.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Career & Technical Education Local Plan for the school year 2015-2016 was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Budget amendments were approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Shumate, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the Budget Continuing Resolution was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried the Athletic Insurance Coverage for the school year 2015-2016 was approved as presented. (See Attachment A)

 

Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook made the following announcements:

 

June 5, 2015 Early Dismissal/Fourth Grading Period Ends 

Elementary Dismissal:  12:30 p.m.

Middle/High Dismissal:  1:00 p.m.

June 8-10, 2015 Required Workdays

 

Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook announced the next Board meeting will be held June 30, 2015 beginning at 12:00 (noon) in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom, located at Wilkes County Schools Administrative Building, 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. There will be no July Board of Education Meeting.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, there being no further business the Board adjourned at 6:21 p.m.
