Summary of Board Minutes March 3, 2014

The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, March 3, 2014 in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, N. C. 28659.

Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Board Members Mr. Rick Lankford, Mr. Darren Shumate, and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III.  Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty Hemric.   Administrative staff included Executive Director of Business Operations Mr. David Johnson, Director of Student Services Dr. Westley Wood, Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks, Director of Athletics and Healthful Living Mr. Chris Skabo, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.

Chairman Mr. Holbrook called the meeting to order and asked if the Agenda needed to be amended. Dr. Hemric made the announcement to amend the agenda.  Due to weather conditions we purposely contacted students and parents to notify them that we would be delaying the Good News Item Number V and Focus on the Curriculum Item Number VI to the April Board Meeting.  Also, we need to convert Item Number X to Item Number IX which will become Action Item F (Moravian Falls Elementary School Project).  We have in attendance Mr. Randy Baker to discuss the Moravian Falls Elementary School Project.  On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the agenda was amended.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Agenda was approved as presented.

Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.  Dr. Hemric along with Mr. Shumate attended the Dreams and KiteStrings Dinner recently with guest speaker Coach Jerry Moore.  We celebrated a lot of successes with our young people.  Coach Jerry Moore shared two questions which can make a difference in this world as we interact with people.  If you can answer yes to the following two questions then you make a valuable contribution to the organization that you are a part of. The first question is “Can I Trust You” and the second “Are you committed to Excellence”?   These are great words of wisdom to incorporate into our daily lives.

Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. No one had signed up.

On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the minutes of February 10, 2014, were approved as presented.
