Summary of Board Minutes May 5, 2014

 

The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659. 

 

Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Board Members Mr. Rick Lankford, Mr. Darren Shumate and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III.  Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty Hemric, and Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Anna R. Lankford. Administrative staff included Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks, Director of Athletics and Healthful Living Mr. Chris Skabo, Interim Director of Exceptional Children Ms. Tracee McManus, Executive Director of Secondary Education Mr. Mark Byrd, Director of Technology Mrs. Julie Triplett, Director of Foreign Language Dr. Joe Bullis, Director of Development Mr. Dennis Huggins, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook called the meeting to order and asked if the agenda needed to be amended. No amendment was needed.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the agenda was approved as presented.

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.  Dr. Hemric recognized our youth and how they come together to celebrate one another.  Recently at West Wilkes Middle School the Science Olympiad was held.  We had 13 teams join together that day.  Also our Youth in United Teens in Action and our T3LC Youth Leadership Philanthropy group reached out to make a positive impact in our community, by awarding grants to worthy organizations. 

 

Dr. Hemric and Dr. Hutchinson recognized Ms. Frances Casey from the C. B. Eller Education Foundation to announce the C. B. Eller Teacher Awards.  Those receiving awards were:

 

Martha Brame – North Wilkesboro Elementary School - $700.00 to attend the Singapore-Math Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

 

Alicia Chappell – East Wilkes Middle School - $410.00 to attend the Bridging the Gap STEM Conference at NC State University.

 

Amber Faw – North Wilkesboro Elementary School - $700.00 to attend the Singapore Math Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

 

Patricia Hiatt – C.B. Eller Elementary School - $500.00 to attend the Elementary Educators State Conference in Concord, North Carolina.

 

Kim Holleman – Mt. Pleasant Elementary School - $1,000.00 to attend the National Energy Conference for Educators in Savannah, Georgia.

 

LeAnn Lassiter – North Wilkesboro Elementary School - $700.00 to attend the Singapore Math Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

 

Kelly Pipes - West Wilkes Middle School - $700.00 to enroll in a Spanish course for better communication with students and parents.

 

Angela Porter – North Wilkesboro Elementary School - $700.00 to attend the Singapore Math Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

 

Michael Pruitt – East Wilkes High School - $640.00 to attend the Advanced Placement Summer Institute for Teachers at UNC Asheville.

 

Kelley Trivette - North Wilkes Middle School - $400.00 to attend the Annual Conference for Middle Level Education in Nashville, Tennessee.

 

Dr. Hemric and Dr. Hutchinson recognized the winners of the Elementary Battle of the Books competition which was held on March 12, 2014 in the Stone Center.  Thirteen teams competed, and the team from Ronda-Clingman was victorious.  The team was coached by Sally Parker.  They also placed 2nd in the Regional’s.  Team members are:

Dr. Hemric and Dr. Hutchinson recognized the students participating he in the Duke Talent Identification Program.  These students scored at or above the national average of recent high school graduates on at least one part of the ACT or the SAT.  Students qualifying for state reorganization were:

William Pugh                 West Wilkes Middle School

Morgan Smithey            West Wilkes Middle School

Tenton Teague              West Wilkes Middle School

Alex Redding                 East Wilkes Middle School

 

Dr. Hemric recognized the North Carolina National Board Certification Program. Three distinguished educators were recognized for their exemplary service in supporting National Board Certification, Candidates and National Board Certified Teachers.  Congratulations to Dr. Jim Brooks, Dr. Wanda Hutchinson and Mrs. Susan Kuenzel.

 

Read to Achieve Update was presented by Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Anna Lankford.  Mrs. Lankford reported that North Carolina’s Read to achieve Law is currently being implemented in Wilkes County Schools.  All North Carolina third grade students are required to pass the Reading End of Grade Assessment or have a good cause exemption in order to be promoted to fourth grade. 

 

No one had signed up for Public Comments.

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the minutes of April 7, 2014 was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the following Personnel Report was approved as presented. 

Retirement(s)

Brenda Mack – Tutor – Wilkesboro Elementary School

Retirement effective – June 1, 2014 with ten years of service

 

Debra Staley – Cafeteria Assistant – Millers Creek Elementary School

Retirement effective – June 1, 2014 with twenty years and nine months of service

 

Larry Meyerhoffer- Custodian - Mountain View Elementary School

Retirement effective – July 1, 2014 with nine years and eight months of service

 

Patty Sexton – Teacher Assistant – Mountain View Elementary School

Retirement effective – July 1, 2014 with nineteen years and four months of service

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Renewal of Licensed Personnel was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the Driver Education Program fee from the current $45 was approved to $55 as presented. With this plan, the driver education program will continue to operate with no local dollars from the school system.

 

On a motion by Mr. Shumate, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the following Out of County/Overnight Field Trips were approved as presented:

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the Audit Contract was approved as presented.

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook had the following announcements:

May 26, 2014 – Memorial Day Holiday

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, there being no further business, the Board adjourned at 6:35 p.m. to prevent the disclosure of information that is privileged or confidential under state or federal law, including but not limited to N.C.G.S. 115C-319, N.C.G.S. 115C-402, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(1) to consult with its attorney in order to preserve the attorney-client privilege, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(3) to consider the qualification, competence, performance, character, fitness, conditions of appointment, or conditions of initial employment of an individual public officer or employee, or prospective public officer or employee, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(6).

 

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Board adjourned from closed session at 7:33 p.m.
