Summary of Board Minutes March 7, 2016
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, March 7, 2016 in the Media Center at North Wilkes High School located at 2986 Traphill Road, North Carolina 28635.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, and Vice Chairman Ms. Sharron Huffman. Board Members Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III, Mr. Rick Lankford and Mr. Darren Shumate. Also present were Superintendent Mr. D. Mark Byrd, Associate Superintendent Ms. Anna Lankford, Director of CTE, Career & College Promise & Safe Schools Mr. Wayne Shepherd, Chief Technology Officer Ms. Julie Triplett, Chief Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, Director of Athletics and Healthful Living Mr. Chris Skabo, Director of Foreign Languages Dr. Joe Bullis, Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks, School Board Attorney Mr. Fred Johnson, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.
Prior to calling the meeting to order, Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook recognized Board Member Mr. Darren Shumate to lead the Invocation.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the agenda was approved as presented.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Superintendent Mr. D. Mark Byrd for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Ms. Anna Lankford to honor two North Wilkes High School students for being recognized at the North Carolina Senior Beta Convention held February 5-6, 2016, at the Sheraton Season Hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina. The two students are:
Kate Duran-Rivera Spanish 2nd Place Division I
Katerine Beshears Spelling 3rd Place Division II
Associate Superintendent Ms. Anna Lankford introduced two State Championship First Place Winners.
Luke Sheets NCHSAA 1A/2A Indoor Track High Jump Championship winner. The state championships were held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem on Saturday, February 13th. Luke is a sophomore at West Wilkes High School.
Dakota Roark NCHSAA 2A 106 lb. Wrestling State Championship winner. The state championships were held at the Greensboro Coliseum on February 18th-20th. Dakaota is a junior at West Wilkes High School. This is the second year in a row he has won a state championship.
Congratulations to both of these students.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. No one had signed up.
On a motion by Ms. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the minutes were approved as presented.
On a motion by Ms. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the personnel
report and blue sheet were approved as presented.
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Out-of- County/Overnight Fields Trips were approved as presented.

On a motion by Ms. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the Budget Amendments was approved as submitted.
State Public School Fund - Increase $420,415.00
Capital Outlay Fund – Increase $2,201,000.00
Current Expense Special Use Fund – Decease $12,800.00
Chairman Mr. Holbrook had the following announcements:

March 28, 2016 – Optional Workday

Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook announced the next Board of Education Meeting will be held April 4, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom, 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook and all the Board of Education Members thanked the staff, and Ms. Lisa Joines, Principal for hosting the meeting.
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mrs. Sharron Huffman and duly carried, there being no further business, the Board adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
