August 25, 2023 (Board Retreat)
The Board of Education convened its retreat at The North Wilkesboro Speedway located at 381 Speedway Lane, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659.
Present for the retreat were Chairman Mr. Randall "Rudy" Holbrook, Vice-Chairman Mr. Hardin Kennedy, III., and Board Members Mr. Kirk Walker, Mrs. Joan Caudill, and Jammie K. Jolly. Administrators present were Superintendent Mr. D. Mark Byrd, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Westley Wood, Chief Academic Officer Mrs. Callie Grubb, Chief Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, Chief Technology Officer Mrs. Julie Triplett, Executive Director of Federal Programs and Career & Technical Education Dr. Joe Bullis, Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks, Director of Student Services Mrs. April Marr, Director of Secondary Education, Athletics, and School Safety Mr. David Johnson, Public Information Officer Mrs. Morgan Mathis, and Executive Administrative Assistant Mrs. Carolyn Triplett. Also in attendance were Attorney Mr. Chris Campbell and Jule Hubbard with the Wilkes Journal Patriot.
Chairman Mr. Randall "Rudy" Holbrook called the meeting to order.
Superintendent Mr. D. Mark Byrd opened up with the welcome and "Purpose for the Day."
Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks gave a brief update on facilities.
Chief Academic Officer Mrs. Callie Grubb presented an academic update.
School Board Attorney Mr. Chris Campbell presented the School Board Member Rights and Responsibilities.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Westley Wood gave an update on personnel.
Chief Academic Officer Mr. Seth Prevette gave an update on the budget.
Director of Student Services Mrs. April Marr gave an update on mental health trends and concerns.
Director of Secondary Education, Athletics, and School Safety Mr. David Johnson presented an update on athletics and safety issues.
Superintendent Mr. D. Mark Byrd gave an update on Wilkes County Schools.
Chairman Mr. Randall "Rudy" Holbrook made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Hardin Kennedy, III seconded, and the vote carried. There being no further business, the Board adjourned at 3:30 PM to attend the ground-breaking ceremony at Wilkes Central High School for the new gymnasium.
