North Carolina school districts use a standard crossing signal to protect students crossing the street to board or exit a bus. The bus driver first holds out their palm, signaling students to WAIT before entering the roadway. After checking for safety, the driver gives a "thumbs up" to let students know it's time to check for traffic and cross. The driver points with their index finger to indicate the correct direction to walk.
