Summary of Board Minutes October 6, 2014

 

The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, October 6, 2014 in the Media Center located at Central Wilkes Middle School, 3541 S. NC Hwy. 16, Moravian Falls, North Carolina 28654. 

 

Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Board Members Mr. Darren Shumate and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III.  Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty T. Hemric, Associate Superintendent Ms. Anna Lankford, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd, Director of Business Services & Chief School Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.

 

Dr. Marty Hemric asked we amend the agenda in order to add Letter C to Item Number V to recognize a National Junior Club Beta Club Member whom had attended the National Beta Club Convention.  On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the agenda was amended.

 

On a motion by Mr. Shumate, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the agenda was approved as presented.

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.  A moment of silence was held in honor of Mr. Todd Welborn, friend, and coach whom passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2014 after a battle with Cancer.

 

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized Ms. Amanda Perry whom represents The Wilkes Community Foundation.  Ms. Perry presented a check for $1,000.00 on behalf of the 2014 Community Grant Program for the Flint Hill Beanstalk Adventure Playground project.  Mrs. Elizabeth Horrell, Art Teacher at North Wilkesboro Elementary School, has been instrumental in the development of the school and community playground.

 

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized Ms. Amanda Perry whom once again represented the Wilkes Community Foundation 2014 Grant Program.  Selected was the T3LC Youth Philanthropy Group to receive a grant for $1,000.00.  The grant monies will be used to enhance the projects T3LC will complete during the 2014-2015 school year.

 

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized Ms. Jessika Norman, a sixth grade student at West Wilkes Middle School.  Ms. Norman placed first in the Oil/Acrylic Art Competition in June at the National Convention.  She competed against Junior Betas from 18 states.  The National Beta is the largest independent, nonprofit, educational youth organization in America.

 

Focus on the Curriculum was presented by Associate Superintendent Mrs. Anna Lankford regarding Wilkes County Schools Data Overview.   Wilkes County Schools increased proficiency percentages in all tested areas and system wide student growth was superior.

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments.  No one had signed up.

 

On a motion by Mr. Shumate, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the minutes were approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the following Personnel Report and Blue Sheet was approved.

On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Out-of-County/Overnight Field Trips were approved for the following:

 

West Wilkes High School           EV Team          Garysburg, NC              10/09/14 – 10/11/14

Wilkes Central High School        FFA Chapter     Louisbille, KY                10/28/14 – 11/01/14

West Wilkes High School           EV Team          Garysburg, NC              04/15/15  -  04/19/14

 

Wilkes Central High School along with Central Wilkes Middle School had scheduled a Band Trip to Universal Studios, in April to Florida but has been cancelled at this time.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Schedule was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Disposition of Surplus Items was approved as presented.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the 2014-2015 Budget Resolution was approved as presented.

 

Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook made the following announcements:

 

 

 

            October 22, 2014 – First Grading Period Ends

October 23, 2014 Required Workday

October 24, 2014 Optional Workday

October 27, 2014 Second Grading Period Begins

 

Chairman Mr. Holbrook announced the next Board meeting November 3, 2014 5:30 p.m. in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

 

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, there being no further business, the Board adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
