Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the
Wilkes County Board of Education
September 8, 2014
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, September 8, 2014 in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Board Members Mr. Rick Lankford, Mr. Darren Shumate and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty T. Hemric, Associate Superintendent Ms. Anna Lankford, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd, Director of Business Services & Chief School Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Ms. Kayte Wiles a senior at Wilkes Early College High School, has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, DC on November 14, 15, and 16th, 2014. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields.
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the East Wilkes FFA Forestry Team. The team finished 1st at the 86th North Carolina FFA State Convention in Raleigh, North Carolina. Thirty-two teams competed for the 1st Place honor. The East Wilkes Team will represent North Carolina at the National FFA Forestry Career Development Event in Louisville, Kentucky in October 2014. The team members are:
Tyler Hall 2nd highest scoring individual in the state
Kayla Mounce 8th highest scoring individual in the state
Joel Smith 14th highest scoring individual in the state
Lydia Burcham 18th highest scoring individual in the state
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the students who attended the 2014 Governor’s School Session. The Governor’s School is a five-week summer residential program for intellectually gifted high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. Five Wilkes County high school students attended the 2014 Governor’s School Session. The students and the areas of qualification are:

Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Mark Byrd recognized Governor’s Teacher Network (GTN). Three Wilkes County teachers were chosen from approximately 450 across North Carolina to be part of this network. They will serve for one year as instructional and professional development experts and facilitators. These outstanding educators are:

Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Awards. The North Carolina High school Athletic Association recognized five Wilkes County Schools athletic teams as first place Scholar-Athlete Teams during the 2013-2014 school year. Each Team received a plaque from the NCHSAA and $300.00 from the North Carolina National Guard Armory. The coach of these teams are:

Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the 2014 Price-Deverick Scholarships. Nichole Hernandez, a teacher at West Wilkes Middle School, used the scholarship for professional development. She attended the International Society for Technology in Education Conference in Atlanta, Georgia during the summer.
Melinda Woodruff, a Pre-K Teacher at Mountain View Elementary School, used her scholarship to join and participate in the National Association of the Education of Young Children. She plans to attend the NAEYC conference in Raleigh, North Carolina during the fall of 2014.
Focus on the Curriculum regarding K-2 Standards Based Grading was presented by Associate Superintendent Mrs. Anna Lankford. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, K-2 teachers will use standards based grading to assess student progress as they work toward mastery of the curriculum standards.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. No one had signed up.

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Addendum to Exceptional Children’s Department Contract with Ardor Health Solutions was approved as presented.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the Huntley, Sigmon & Associates, CPA’s Engagement Letter was approved as presented. Wilkes County Schools was randomly selected as 1 of 25 local governments across the state of North Carolina to be required to have an audit of its Retirement/Pension plan outside of the normal yearly Financial Statement audit.

Chairman Mr. Holbrook announced the next Board meeting October 6, 2014 5:30 p.m. at Central Wilkes Middle School/Media Center located at 3541 S. NC Hwy 16, Moravian Falls, North Carolina 28654. Chairman Mr. Holbrook along with all board members thanked everyone for a great start to our 2014-2015 school year.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, there being no further business, the Board adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
