Summary of Board Minutes June 30, 2015
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a called meeting at 12:00 p. m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 in the Instructional Services Conference Room at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Board Members Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Mr. Rick Lankford, Mr. Darren Shumate, and Mr. Hardin Kennedy, III. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty Hemric, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd, Executive Director of Human Resources Dr. Westley Wood, Director of Business Services & Chief School Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, Director of Secondary Education Dr. Donna Cotton, Director of Student Services Ms. April Marr, Director of Athletics and Healthful Living Mr. Chris Skabo, Director of Development Mr. Dennis Huggins, Director of CTE, Career & College Promise & Safe Schools Mr. Wayne Shepherd, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Board Member Mr. Darren Shumate to lead the Invocation, and Mr. Holbrook called the meeting to order.
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mrs. Huffman, and duly carried, the minutes were approved as presented.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the following Personnel Report and Blue Sheet were approved.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Budget Amendments were approved as presented:
State Public School Fund - $ 905,887.92 (Increase)

Federal Grant Fund – $ 200,004.05 (Increase)
Capital Outlay Fund - $ 870,089.00 (Increase)
Child Nutrition Fund - $ 378,612.00 (Increase)

On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the Disposition of Surplus Items was approved as presented (see attachment A).
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate the Land Purchase for property adjoining the Wilkes County Bus Garage was approved as presented. The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase price of $40,000.00 at their June 2nd Commissioner meeting. The purchase of this property would secure the ability to continually utilize the property for many years, as well as give options for expansion if needed in the future.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the out of county/overnight field trips were approved by the board prior to the meeting.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Meal Price Increase was approved as presented. The USDA (Paid Lunch Equity requires Child Nutrition Departments to continually increase meal prices until they reach the federal average price for school meals. Wilkes County School’s prices are currently below the average. Wilkes County Schools will continue in the Community Eligibility Provision for the 2015 – 2016 school year, which allows us to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students within the school system.

On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried the Roof Replacement at West Wilkes High School Practice Gym was approved as presented: Low Bidder; Allied Roofing with a base bid of $43,975.00.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried the Roof Replacement for the Ronda-Clingman Elementary School Gym was approved as presented: Low Bidder; Bond Tec with a base bid of $49,350.00.
Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook announced the next Board meeting will be held August 3, 2015 beginning at 5:30 pm in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom, located at Wilkes County Schools Administrative Building, 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. There will be no July Board of Education Meeting.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford, and duly carried, there being no further business the Board adjourned at 6.21 p.m.
