Wayne Shepherd, WCS Director of CTE / Career and College Promise, discusses the Apprenticeship Wilkes program and how students should go about applying.

(Music plays) So, I want to talk a little bit about our apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program started about three years ago and local businesses that have jobs that qualify for the apprenticeship waivers, the Community College tuition-free waivers, every year we work with those companies. They let us know what their particular occupations are. This year, because of COVID, we have to think of some unique and different ways of getting that information to students. So, as far as the students are concerned, they should be getting an email. They should be seeing flyers on our social media sites, on our web pages. We've got several apprenticeship opportunities this coming year. We've got some in construction. We've got one for a CNC operator. We've got one for a print press operator. We've got some for pre-nursing. Lots and lots of different opportunities, even in the midst of our COVID pandemic, we still have those opportunities. And, so the student will need to go online, pull down that application. If they have any questions that can contact myself or Andrea Smith here in CTE office, and we'll get that information out to them. But, some of the benefits, it's great local jobs that have a progressive wage scale. The student is given a 100% tuition waiver to the Community College through the State, and they get to earn money all while they're learning, doing their hands-on work. So, for example, in construction, a student could take one day a week at the college and take some safety classes and so forth, and then go out four or five other days a week and work those 40 hours and not have to stand in line to compete at McDonald's or Hardee's for whatever they pay for 15 hours a week. If they really want to work, and they've got that desire to learn, they can really get some good opportunities for the apprenticeships. And, pre-nursing is a new one for us this year as well. And, basically, what it does is allow our nursing fundamentals students to work as CNAs and get their RN, their LPN, their radiology degree, whatever healthcare field they desire work in to get that training free of charge at the Community College. So, we're real happy about that. So, they need to go out and find that information on our social media and web pages.
