District - Parent Advisory Council (D-PAC)

Please consider joining the Wilkes County Schools' District - Parent Advisory Council as we work together to engage our community. The purpose of D-PAC is to address and discuss ways to improve our instructional, social and emotional services to students and their families. If you are interested, please contact your school's principal, parent liaison or Dr. Joe Bullis, Director of Federal Programs. Engage, connect and transform with Wilkes County Schools' D-PAC!

Parents have a right to:

Request information about staff members' credentials. Ask your child's principal about how to do this and/or check the school's website for information.
To be notified if their child has been assigned, or has been taught four consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet the "Highly Qualified" definition.
Know how your child's school is performing. The most recent North Carolina School Report Card for your child's school can be viewed at NC School Report Cards
Be involved in the planning and implementation of the parent and family engagement program at their school.
Be involved in the development of the Parent and Family Engagement Policy

Receive information about the Parent and Family Engagement Policy / Program at an annual meeting.
Receive material and training for parents and staff to foster greater parent and family engagement.

What can parents do?

Attend school events.
Visit your child's classroom as an observer or volunteer.
Volunteer for schoolwide projects.
Participate in the Parent Advisory Council and School Leadership Team.

What can schools do?

Invite parents to take an active role in the total school program.
Offer adult programs such as workshops or classes to help parents with academic or parenting skills.
Reach out to parents through newsletters, special events, media outlets, and/or parent-teacher conferences.
Describe how the school and parent will share in the responsibility of improved student academic, emotional and social achievement through the school-parent compact.

Testing Transparency

At the beginning of each year, all Wilkes County Schools that receive Title I Funds shall notify parents of each student attending those schools information regarding any State or local educational agency policy regarding student participation in any assessments mandated by section 1111(b)(2) and by the State or local educational agency, which shall include a policy, procedure, or parental right to opt the child out of such assessment, where applicable.

Wilkes County Schools under this part shall make widely available through public means for each grade served by the school system information on each assessment required by the State, and where the information is available and feasible to report, and assessments required district wide by Wilkes County Schools including:

The subject matter assessed
The purpose for which the assessment is designed and used
The source of the requirement for the assessment; and
Where such information is available
- The amount of time the students will spend taking the assessment, and the schedule for the assessment; and
- The time and format for disseminating results.

Format

The notice and information provided to parents under this section shall be in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, provided in a language that the parent can understand.
