August 6, 2018
Students, Parents, and Members of the Wilkes County Schools Family,
As the calendar turns to August, I can’t help but begin to feel the excitement of knowing our teachers and students will return to our schools in just a few short weeks. As I begin my third full year as Superintendent of Wilkes County Schools, I am not only proud of what our students and teachers have been able to accomplish over the past couple of years, but also very excited about what the future holds for those in our school system.
With the start of school, we are reminded once more that our students and our staff are our greatest assets and their safety is our number one priority. I believe you will see a renewed focus on safety in our schools in 2018-2019 and in years to come. Our focus on the whole child, their mental health and supporting the social and emotional needs of our students will help with this as well. Our goal is for every person who walks through the doors of our schools to feel safe and welcome while they are there and we will strive daily to improve this. Again, nothing is more important to us than the safety of our students and our staff.
I have stated many times before that I truly believe great things are taking place in Wilkes County Schools. I continue to hear positive feedback on the Leader in Me program in our middle schools, which I believe will have a tremendous impact on the students in this county. Whether through our Early College, our partnership with Wilkes Community College, or career internships and apprenticeships, I believe the opportunities that our high school students have to prepare them for future success are second to none. The literacy focus and progress monitoring of students in our elementary schools is ensuring that our students are getting the academic foundation they need to be prepared for success in later grades. Our teachers have exciting things taking place in their classes on a daily basis and we want our students to know that the adults in our schools have a genuine interest in their success and their future. While we have the data to show our students and teachers are accomplishing great things, even more impressive is what is taking place in our schools and classrooms on a daily basis.
In closing, I hope you share my excitement for the 2018-2019 school year and that we can work closely together to make this the best year you or your child has ever had. I hope you will find a way to support our schools more than you ever have before and I look forward to hearing from you about the great things taking place in Wilkes County Schools!
