Additional Information and Requirements
State law requires students to be 14½ on or before the first day of class.
This is a 30-hour course, and all students must attend 30 hours of instruction. Students may miss one class session for any reason, but MUST attend the make-up day. Students must attend 15 of the 16 sessions, and there are no exceptions. A minimum of six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction will follow the classroom portion.
The class is open to all students enrolled in public school, private school, and homeschools licensed by the State of North Carolina.
Registration forms may be picked up in the school's front office. You may also download and print the form from our district website (Driver's Education Registration Form). Include the student's school email address (if applicable) and at least two (2) phone numbers. Be sure handwriting is legible, and do not send any money with registration forms. Fees will be collected at the scheduled parent meeting.
Class fees are $65.00. Please make checks payable to Wilkes Central or bring $65.00 in cash. Fees will be taken at the parent meeting or on the first day of class.
A Parent Meeting will be held on May 15, 2025. Class fees will be collected starting at 5:15 PM. This will also be the time set aside for late registrations. A short meeting will begin at 6:00 PM. Class rules and regulations will be discussed during this meeting.
Announcements will be made before each session by the office and on student information sites regarding when to come by the office to pick up registration forms. Form can also be printed from the district website (link is included above). Students should take the form home, have parents complete the form, and return it to the school office. Please indicate which summer session you want to attend. There will be a cut-off date for registration to be turned in (May 15). Students will be notified of their registration status by Canvas and by a list posted outside the office. Homeschool and private school students will be notified by phone. Be sure all handwriting is legible on the registration form.
Behind-the-Wheel Training will begin with the oldest students being scheduled first. Please do not expect to be given a driving schedule when the classroom portion is completed. Mike Greene will be in charge of BTW training, and there are many factors that determine when students are scheduled. Every effort is made to get students through this hands-on training as soon as possible.
