Welcome to the Remote Learning Grading Guidance for Kindergarten through Fifth grade. This is Wilkes County Schools' plan for spring of 2020.

Wilkes County Schools' focus for grading in Kindergarten through 5th grade will be more on engagement - engaging the student with the content in the curriculum rather than on evaluation of assignments. We will also focus on promoting student growth and Standards Mastery, preparing our students for our return to school and the next grade level. Continued contact with students - providing meaningful feedback in connection to school - will also be a focus. And, very importantly, the focus on the fact that the school year is not over. Our school buildings may be closed, but we expect learning to continue until the end of the school year.

How will grades be determined for Kindergarten through 5th?
Grades during remote learning are only given if all of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's critical factors are met. Those factors are: that learning is accessible by all students meeting all diverse student needs, that there is consistent communication between teachers and students, that the focus is on priority standards and skill development, and that evidence of student learning is included. And, very importantly, that we consider the whole child, including the Home Learning environment. All final evaluation of learning for students will be based on our last day of face-to-face instruction which was March 13th. Any additional learning, feedback, or grading will only improve a student's final grade.

Wilkes County Schools' current plan for grades in kindergarten through 5th are that remote learning will continue through May 15th or the end of the school year. Our focus will be on giving continued feedback to students to support their growth and progress toward the next grade level. Assignment deadlines may be given, but not meeting those deadlines will not harm a student's final grade. Promotion to the next grade level will be determined by student progress through March 13th and any progress during remote learning. Again, the school year is not over, and we expect learning to continue until the end of the school year. We want to help your student to prepare for their future education.
