Welcome to Driver's Education
The goal of Wilkes County Schools and its Driver Education teachers is to provide a quality driver education program to all students in a safe and timely manner.
The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires 30 hours of classroom instruction and six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel training.
Depending on a student's extra-curricular activities, it takes an average of 3-6 months to complete Driver Education requirements from the time of registration to the completion of class time and driving training. Students wishing to obtain their learner's permit by age 15 must register on or before the age of 14 ½ years old. Jobs and extra-curricular activities may cause scheduling conflicts that would impede students from completing requirements within the average time mentioned above.
There are no academic requirements needed to take the Driver Education class; however, there are academic requirements that must be met to apply for a learner's permit or driver's license after finishing the Driver Education class (see Driver Eligibility Certificate FAQs).
Driver's Education is typically offered three times a year through our school system - during the fall, spring, and summer. New offerings are advertised on this website and through our middle and high schools. Click here to learn more about the currently scheduled offerings.
