Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the
Wilkes County Board of Education
August 5, 2013
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, August 5, 2013 in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28659.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Rick Lankford, Board Members Mrs. Sharron Huffman, and Mr. Darren Shumate. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty Hemric, Associate Superintendent Dr. Wanda Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Anna Lankford Executive and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.
On a motion by Mr. Shumate, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the Agenda was approved as presented.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook called the meeting to order recognizing Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.
Dr. Marty Hemric recognized Mr. Anthony Myers, Intern from Wake Forest University as our Guest. Mr. Myers is a WCHS graduate and a rising junior at Wake Forest University. This is his second summer volunteering at the Central Office. His major is Secondary Education. He recently completed a brochure for our Band Fundraising project. We wish to publically thank Mr. Myers for his service to Wilkes County Schools.
Focus on the Curriculum regarding Home Base was presented by Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Anna Lankford. Home Base is a statewide, instructional improvement (IIS) and student information system (SIS) for teachers, students, parents and administrators. All schools in North Carolina will be transitioning to Home Base in July/August 2013. Power School replaces the NC Wise Student Information System.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. No one had signed up.
On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the minutes of July 8, 2013 were
approved as presented.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Education for Parent and
Parenting Students Policy Number 4023 was approved as presented.
On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mrs. Huffman, and duly carried the School Assignment Policy Number
4150 was approved as presented.
The Parental Involvement Policy Number 1310/4002 was presented by Mrs. Anna R. Lankford, Assistant
Superintendent. Federal Law requires an annual review of this policy.
Dr. Wanda Hutchinson, Associate Superintendent presented the Teacher Eligible for Tenure. This item will
Be submitted in September for final approval.

Dr. Hemric read the following revised statement (see attachment two) to the Board Members regarding Student Fees for 2013-2014.
At the September meeting a list of all student fees for the 2013-14 school year will be presented to the Board of Education for review and approval as provided in N. C. Gen Statue 115C-47(6). We are advised that in the past the student handbook fee charged by at least one high school may not have been presented to the Board of Education for approval. We regret this omission and will grant any student or parent who desires a refund of the student handbook fee, $5.00; they paid within the past three years. All student fees, including handbook fees, are waived for students for whom the payment of a fee is a financial hardship in accordance with Policy 4600 and no student is denied access to any educational opportunity or educational materials because of nonpayment of a fee.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook announced the next Board meeting September 9, 2013, 5:30 p. m. at East Wilkes High School Media Center located at 13315 Elkin Hwy 268, Ronda, North Carolina.

6:15 p.m.
