Summary of Board Minutes December 2, 2013
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, December 2, 2013 in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom at 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, N. C. 28659.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice Chairman Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Board Members Mr. Rick Lankford, Mr. Darren Shumate, and Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty Hemric, Associate Superintendent Dr. Wanda Hutchinson, and Board Attorney Douglas Punger. Administrative staff included Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks, Executive Director of Business Operations Mr. David Johnson, and Executive Director of Secondary Education Mr. Mark Byrd, Director of Student Services, Mr. Westley Wood, Director of Federal Programs Dr. Joe Bullis, and Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook called the meeting to order and asked if the Agenda needed to be amended. Dr. Hemric made the announcement to amend the agenda to omit in Item X Action Item B: Board Policy Number 4303. This Policy will be resubmitted in January. On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the agenda was amended.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Agenda was approved as presented.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook recognized Dr. Hemric for the devotional thought and pledge of allegiance.
Dr. Wanda Hutchinson announced the following Good News Items. First were our individuals and businesses that have made generous contribution to the 2013 Further the Future of Music Campaign.

Dr. Wanda Hutchinson recognized three students from Wilkes County Schools that were chosen to be part of the North Carolina Middle School Honors Chorus. Approximately 950 students from across the state auditioned and only 175 were chosen. Middle school students chosen from Wilkes were:

North Wilkes Middle School Brian Foster
Four students from Wilkes County Schools were chosen as part of the North Carolina Elementary School Honors Chorus. Approximately 605 students from across the state auditioned and only 198 were chosen. Elementary students from Wilkes were:

Focus on the Curriculum was presented by Mr. Todd Williams, Director of Career & Technical Education. Mr. Williams did an overview of the ACT Certified Work Ready Communities and the process of aligning CTE programming efforts with the needs of local business and industry.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. Ms. Teresa Ray spoke to the Board Members on The Common Core and presented the members a DVD in regards to the Common Core to watch at their convenience.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the minutes of November 4, 2013, were approved as presented.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Lankford and duly carried, the following Personnel Report was approved as presented.
Retirement(s)
Nancy Hill – Receptionist – Central Wilkes Middle School
Retirement – Effective January 1, 2014 with fifteen years and six months of service
Patsy Parsons – Teacher – West Wilkes High School
Retirement – Effective January 1, 2014 with twenty-six years and nine months of service
Janie Wilmoth – Cafeteria Assistant – East Wilkes Middle School
Retirement – Effective December 1, 2013 with ten years and four months of service
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the revisions to Board Policies 4320 and 7251 were approved as presented.
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Out of County/Overnight field Trips were approved as presented. However one notable change was made to the memo. Mr. Mark Byrd, Executive Director of Secondary Education presented that the date for the West Wilkes High School student playing in the Blue/Gray American Bowl needed to indicate the date of December 20, 2013 to December 23, 2013.
Mr. Bergie Speaks, Director of Maintenance presented to the Board Members the resolution of surplus personal property. On a motion by Ms. Huffman, and seconded by Mr. Kennedy the disposition of surplus items was approved as presented. See Resolution Surplus Personal Property (attachment one).
Ms. Wanda Hutchinson, Associate Superintendent presented Board Policy 7430 (Substitute Teachers), Board Policy 6320 (Use of Student Transportation Services), and a new Policy Employee Use of Social Media for review. These policies will be presented in January for final approval.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, there being no further business, the Board adjourned at 6:23 p.m.
