Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the
Wilkes County Board of Education
December 14, 2015
The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit met in a regular meeting at 5:30 p. m. on Monday, December 14, 2015 at East Wilkes High School/Media Center located at 13315 Elkin Hwy 268, Ronda, North Carolina 28670.
Present for the meeting were Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Board Members, Mrs. Sharron Huffman, Mr. Darren Shumate, Mr. Hardin C. Kennedy, III, and Mr. Rick Lankford. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Marty T. Hemric, Associate Superintendent Ms. Anna Lankford, Assistant Superintendent D. Mark Byrd, Director of Secondary Education/Dean of Wilkes Early College High School Dr. Donna Cotton, Director of Development Mr. Dennis Huggins, Director of CTE, Career & College Promise & Safe Schools Mr. Wayne Shepherd, Chief Finance Officer Mr. Seth Prevette, Director of Foreign Language and Title I Dr. Joe Bullis, Director of Exceptional Children Ms. Tracee McManus, Director of Testing and Accountability Ms. Stephanie Williams, Chief Technology Officer Julie Triplett, Director of Transportation Mr. Eric Barker, Executive Director of Human Resources Dr. Westley Wood, and Director of Maintenance Mr. Bergie Speaks. Executive Administrative Assistant Carolyn Triplett was absent.
Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook called the meeting to order, and led the Invocation.
Dr. Marty Hemric recognized the 1A Cross County State Champion. Kyle Rhodes, a junior at East Wilkes High School competed on November 7, 2015 in Kernersville, North Carolina and finished first place to bring home the Title of State Champion in 1-A Cross County. We are proud of Kyle’s dedication and accomplishment and the way he exhibits excellence as a student-athlete in Wilkes County Schools.
Assistant Superintendent Mr. Mark Byrd recognized the East Wilkes High School Football Team. The team went undefeated during the regular season for the first time since the 1981 East Wilkes Team that our current superintendent was a part of. By winning 13 games, a conference championship and making the third round of the state playoffs, this was the most successful football team in the history of East Wilkes High School. Their head coach J.K. Adkins presented Superintendent, Dr. Marty Hemric with a game ball that the members of the football team signed in his honor. Dr. Marty Hemric will be retiring at the end of December.
Chairman Mr. Holbrook asked if anyone had signed up for public comments. No one had signed up.
On a motion by Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mrs. Huffman and duly carried, the agenda was approved as presented.
On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the minutes were approved as presented.
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the personnel report and blue sheet was approved as presented.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Low Performing School Plans of Improvement was approved as presented.
On a motion by Mr. Shumate, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the Out of County/Overnight Field Trips were approved as presented.

On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Mr. Shumate and duly carried, the Budget Amendments were approved as presented.
On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Mr. Kennedy and duly carried, the 2016-2017 School Calendar was approved as presented.

Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook announced the next Board meeting will be held January 11, 2016 p.m. in the Arnold and Becky Lakey Boardroom, located at Wilkes County Schools Administrative Building, 613 Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
Chairman Mr. Rudy Holbrook thanked Ms. Jodi Weatherman, principal of East Wilkes High School and her staff for having everything ready for tonight’s Board of Education Meeting. Mr. Rudy Holbrook as well as all of the Board Members wished everyone a Merry Christmas. On a motion from Mr. Kennedy, seconded by Mrs. Huffman, and duly carried the Board adjourned at 6:04 p.m. to closed session; to prevent the disclosure of information that is privileged or confidential under state or federal law, including but not limited to N.C.G.S. 115C-319, N.C.G.S. 115C-402, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(1) to consult with its attorney in order to preserve the attorney-client privilege, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(3) to consider the qualification, competence, performance, character, fitness, conditions of appointment, or conditions of initial employment of an individual public officer or employee, or prospective public officer or employee, pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(6)
On a motion by Mrs. Huffman, seconded by Darren Shumate and duly carried, the Board ended closed session 6:20 p.m.
On a motion by Mr. Lankford, seconded by Darren Shumate and duly carried, there being no further business, the Board adjourned at 6:21 p.m.
Mr. Rudy Holbrook announced that a reception was being held in Dr. Hemric’s honor in the cafeteria of East Wilkes High School. Dr. Marty T. Hemric has been in education for thirty-one years. The Wilkes County Board of Education Members presented him with a framed print of all of the schools and administrative office’s that he has served during his career. Guests included, the Wilkes County Commissioners, Wilkes County Manager, former coaches, other elected officials, students, committee members of which Dr. Hemric has served, family, and friends.
