Lead Instructional Specialist/Data Coach

Nature of Work

The lead instructional specialist/data coach works under general supervision to perform a variety of professional work to assist in the coordination of the curriculum used in the school district.  The position is responsible for interpreting curriculum changes, updating teachers and principals of those changes, and ensures instruction is aligned with curriculum goals.  This position also works as a mentor to the beginning teacher and as a data coach to assist schools with disaggregation of student achievement data from assessments to impact instruction. The lead instructional specialist also has additional duties on the district level to assist the Executive Director with major curriculum initiatives.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide support to teachers in their classroom through coaching, modeling, and mentoring.

Provide mentor support to beginning teachers.

Create positive relationships with teachers and administrators.

Meet regularly with principal to determine school needs.

Coordinate and provide on-going staff development opportunities at the district and school levels.

Communicate changes in the North Carolina curriculum to teachers and principals; develop and implement curricular guides to facilitate instruction.

Meet with teachers during grade level planning to assist with curriculum alignment, instructional strategies, data analysis, and assessment.

Assist teachers with lesson plan formats, lesson planning, and lesson plan reviews.

Facilitate data meetings with teachers as they analyze and make data driven decisions to impact student achievement.

Stay abreast of research based instructional strategies by attending professional development sessions and reading professional educational research.

Work positively toward meeting identified district and building improvement goals.

Assist with the creation of district benchmark assessments and data analysis.

Assist Executive Director for K-12 Curriculum with district initiatives.

Performs other related work as required.

 

Qualifications

Valid North Carolina Teaching Certificate required

Master’s Degree preferred

Minimum of five years teaching experience required

Record of positive classroom experiences

Knowledge of North Carolina curriculum

Ability to conduct professional development for teachers and administrators

Ability to disaggregate, interpret, and analyze assessment data

Success working collaboratively with colleagues

Communicate effectively with administrators, principals, teachers, and parents both orally and in writing

Considerable knowledge of the county and school board policies, procedures, and standards regarding K-12 education

Essential Job Functions

Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, SMARTBoards, document cameras, etc.

Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, statements, etc.

Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, statements, etc. using prescribed formats.

Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.

Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. 

Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

Requires the ability to talk and hear ideas by means of spoken word.

Must be able to communicate effectively.
