5050 Inclement Weather/Emergency Closings

The superintendent of the Wilkes County Schools is responsible for developing and administering procedures for the temporary closing of one school or any number of schools due to inclement weather or any other unforeseen occurrence which presents a threat to the safety of students, staff or property. The superintendent or designee is responsible for ensuring that all who are interested, including parents and the news media, are notified as soon as feasible via the electronic notification system, radio, and/or television.
 
In the event of schools releasing early due to inclement weather, school-based administrators should remain at school until all buses have completed their scheduled routes. All other school-based staff will be dismissed at the principal’s discretion.
 
USE OF EMPLOYEE CODES – (Employees should adjust their reporting time based on road conditions)
 
Employee Code A:
No Day – School is closed for teachers and teacher assistants.  Day will be made up on a designated makeup day.
 
All other 10 month employees (secretaries, custodians, etc.)
Report to work
Use annual leave
Use comp time
Take the day without pay
 
All 11 & 12 month employees (secretaries, custodians, data managers, etc.)
Report to work
Use annual leave
Use comp time
Take the day without pay 
 
Employee Code B:
Optional Teacher Workday
WCS employees are encouraged to use good judgment when deciding to report to work. If travel conditions are not safe, employees should choose from one of the options available in Code B: Optional Teacher Workday.

Essential Personnel Only
Only essential personnel report to work in extreme weather conditions. Employees who are considered essential will be notified by their supervisors.
 
CANCELLATION OF CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
 
It shall be the policy of the Wilkes County Board of Education to curtail all co-curricular activities including practice, meetings, engagements and/or athletic contests when school has been dismissed early due to inclement weather. Day by day decisions will be made concerning these activities during the same event of inclement weather.
 
Specific guidelines to govern athletic activities during inclement weather events are to be followed as stated in the Wilkes County Schools Athletic Policies and Procedures Handbook.
 
Co-curricular activities of any formal nature may not be held unless they are in the best interest of the students and school and have the expressed prior approval of the principal. Any activities so approved must be supervised directly by an authorized school staff member.
